It helps to include your iOS version and app version, and what you did just before the problem. The app version is on the app's page in the App Store, under Version History.
Common questions
What does it cost?
In Norway NOK 249 a month or NOK 1,999 a year, with 14 days free the first time you subscribe. In other countries the App Store shows the price in your own currency. The subscription is bought and managed through the App Store.
How do I cancel?
On iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → TrenchDocs. You can also tap “Subscription and purchases” on the project list in the app, then “Manage subscription”. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the period to avoid renewal. You keep access until the end of the period you have paid for.
What can I do without a subscription?
Read everything that has been recorded, make the report, export CSV and GeoJSON, make a backup and import it again, and delete. Recording new projects and trenches and changing what has been recorded needs a subscription. Nothing is locked when the subscription ends — what you have recorded is yours either way.
I have paid, but the app says I have no subscription
Tap “Subscription and purchases” on the project list, then “Restore purchases”. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID you bought with. The same screen has a status line showing what the app sees — if restoring does not help, email us that line.
The position is inaccurate. What do I do?
The position is what the phone reports, and it is no better than the phone. Under a roof, next to walls and down in deep trenches it often gets worse. Where it is not good enough, place the point with the crosshair on the map instead (“Pick on the map”). The app does no surveying and does not claim to.
Why is there no map under the line in the report?
The background map in the report comes from Kartverket and covers Norway only. Outside Norway the line is drawn on a white background. The map images also have to be fetched when the report is made — without signal, the map is drawn without a background.
What does the tick on the list before backfilling mean?
That something is recorded — nothing more. Four items are on the list for every trench: the line, what is in the trench, photos and backfill. The job the trench started with adds a few more, such as fall, a chamber or warning tape. “Warning tape not laid” is a record too and gets a tick. The list says nothing about whether the work was done as it should be, and you can tap “Finished” whatever it shows.
Where is what I record stored?
Locally on your device, in the app's own storage. It is not sent to any server, and neither the publisher nor anyone else has access to it.
How do I make a backup?
Tap “Backup” on the project list, then “Make a backup”. You get the projects, trenches, photos and attachments as one ZIP file, and choose where to save it. Make one regularly and keep it somewhere other than the phone.
How do I move everything to a new phone?
Restore the new phone from its iCloud backup, or install the app, tap “Backup”, then “Import a backup”, and choose the ZIP file. Importing only adds — what is already in the app is left untouched, and you can import the same file more than once.
What if I lose my phone?
Because everything is stored locally, the data exists only where you put it. If the phone is included in iCloud Backup, the content comes back when you restore a new phone. If it is not, the ZIP file is your only copy.
Can I delete things?
Yes. Points, side trenches, installations, depths, layers, areas, photos, trenches and whole projects can be deleted, also without a subscription. The app asks first, and deleting cannot be undone — make a backup before you tidy up. The publisher holds no copy.
Does the app work without signal?
Yes. Everything is recorded and stored on the phone. Only the background map needs the network; without signal, what has already been fetched is shown, and the line is drawn regardless.
What language is the app in?
English and Norwegian. The first time the app opens, it picks the language the phone is set to. You can switch under “Language” on the project list.
Does the app replace professional judgement?
No. The app records what you enter and puts it together as a report and exports. It does not assess depths, does not check against standards or the excavation plan, and draws no conclusions on your behalf. Professional responsibility stays with whoever does the work.
